SC 6 Week Ban Overruled + NC 20 Week Ban Reinstated (8/18/22)

Within the hour of us shouting in joy from the small reprieve of PPSAT blocking the six-week ban in South Carolina through the court, we received the news of the 20 week ban being reinstated in North Carolina. The breaths we took to celebrate and the space we held to speak are sacred distant memories.

Although commonly said in our community, we never believed North Carolina to be a beacon of hope in the South. As an organization that works in both Carolinas, this news feels like deja vu. As an organization that works in both Carolinas, we know that we are not free until we are all free: We’ve always maintained that our rights are penstrokable, precedent reversible, and one election away. Reproductive Justice is not defined as waking up to check the news to see if it’s still there. The judge who reinstated this ban reinstated fear in the rightful place of freedom. 

Carolina Abortion Fund asks the public to resist collective amnesia. This dated doctrine does not represent the labor of southern activists, advocates, and community members. CAF asks that folks use every channel to funnel their rage: vote, write, organize and scream in November! Finally, CAF asks folks to dream. We have been presented an opportunity to impact legislation in a way that will include us all, legislation that we don’t have to call the floor. What do you want? Is it for children to get healthcare without question? Is it care from your bed? Is it abortions anytime, anywhere, for my reason? Now is the time to think past tearing it all down. We ask that you dream now.
