SCOTUS Leak 5/3/2022

We at CAF want to acknowledge how strange and liminal this moment feels – not only because the South has been post-Roe for a long time, but also because this is still, formally, a preview. The ink is all but dried, and yet we wait.  The leaked draft indicates the Supreme Court will release a decision overturning Roe v. Wade sometime in the next few weeks. But today, we’re funding procedures. People are going to their appointments. Abortion is still available to people in North and South Carolina, and we are ready to help coordinate that care. 

Knowing we aren’t free until we are all free, no one has room for comfort. Abortion restrictions punish the most vulnerable amongst us – particularly people of color, trans individuals seeking care, and low-income individuals. At CAF we have maintained that the South has been post-Roe. This means that as North and South Carolinians we are familiar with this uncertainty; as Southerners, we have fought for every right we have. 

Since 2011, the Carolina Abortion Fund has coordinated and funded care for patients in North and South Carolina. We provide funding, transportation support, doula services, and post-abortion support. We are supported by a small staff (funded through outside grants) and a volunteer base that operates our warm line, text line, and judicial bypass line. 100% of donations we receive fund our callers. If you are feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do at this moment, investing in our infrastructure will help us stay open. There is no need to reinvent the wheel: we’ve been doing this for over a decade and preparing for this potential outcome for a long time. Right now the most important thing you can do, if you are able, is donate. If you can’t donate, spread the word. Talk to your family and friends about abortion. Tell them abortion funds exist to ensure people can access care. No matter what, abortions will continue to be needed, and people will need funding and practical support to access abortions. We will continue to provide that funding and support. No matter what. 

Nostres en CAF queremos reconocer lo extraño y liminal que se siente este momento - no sólo porque el Sur ha sido post-Roe durante mucho tiempo, sino también porque esto sigue siendo, formalmente, una vista previa. La tinta está casi seca, y sin embargo esperamos. El borrador filtrado indica que la Corte Suprema dará a conocer una decisión que revocará a Roe v. Wade en las próximas semanas. Pero hoy, estamos financiando procedimientos. La gente va a sus citas. El aborto todavía está disponible para la gente en Carolina del Norte y del Sur, y estamos listes para ayudar a coordinar esa atención.

 Sabiendo que no somos libres hasta que todes somos libres, nadie tiene espacio para la comodidad. Las restricciones al aborto castigan a les más vulnerables entre nosotres, en particular la gente no blanca, las personas trans que buscan atención médica y las personas de bajos ingresos. En CAF hemos sostenido que el Sur ha sido post-Roe. Esto significa que como Carolinenses del Norte y del Sur estamos familiarizades con esta incertidumbre; como Sureñes, hemos luchado por todos los derechos que tenemos.

 Desde 2011, el Fondo para el Aborto de Carolina ha coordinado y financiado la atención a pacientes en Carolina del Norte y del Sur. Proporcionamos financiamiento, apoyo al transporte, servicios de doula y apoyo después del aborto. Contamos con el apoyo de un pequeño personal (financiado a través de subvenciones externas) y una base de voluntarios que opera nuestra línea directa, línea de texto y línea de derivación judicial. El 100% de las donaciones que recibimos financian a nuestros llamantes. Si se siente sobrepasade e insegure de qué hacer en este momento, invertir en nuestra infraestructura nos ayudará a mantenernos abiertos. No hay necesidad de reinventar la rueda: hemos estado haciendo esto durante más de una década y preparándonos para este posible resultado durante mucho tiempo. Ahora mismo lo más importante que puede hacer, si puede, es donar. Si no puede donar, corra la voz. Hable con su familia y amiges sobre el aborto. Dígales que existen fondos para el aborto para asegurar que las personas puedan acceder a la atención médica. No importa qué, los abortos seguirán siendo necesarios, y la gente necesitará financiamiento y apoyo práctico para acceder a los abortos.
